Desired Destination

Tata Vislevskaya’s photos of the Swiss Alps so perfectly capture the mood and experience that I struggle to describe to people who have not seen the unforgettable landscapes that Switzerland has to offer. The colors in these images and the whole atmosphere captures much more than just a typical environmental portrait would–here you can really feel the imposing nature of being surrounded by the cold, rigid backdrop and miles of endless snow. Vislevskaya summed up her style best in an email to me recently: “I like the unusual–not tourist places of the world–which are hidden from most eyes. In nature, I see not just pretty inspiring landscapes, but also the pain, loneliness and fear. I would like to view wildlife as a very important part of our life.”

Pain, loneliness and fear–this is a photographer who delivers many great contributions by giving us insight into the world’s natural beauty in those places that we often overlook in favor of the obvious attractions. Instead of just taking a pretty picture, she analyzes the environment: The landscape, the trees, the mountains, the snow, the sky, etc…and in doing so, unearths the emotions that are prevalent in all these things that we consistently take for granted. The lesson for the day is that it’s important to get outside of your comfort zone and explore. Staying stagnant will leave you dead and unappreciative of all that seemed mundane, but in reality, it was beautiful and it was life.
